The original song or the original tune? "The Animals went in two by two" exists in myriad versions, set to various tunes, with some sections borrowed from the song they re set to. Thus the versions which go "the animals went in to by two, hurrah, hurrah", uses the tune and "hurrah, hurrah!" from "when Johnny comes marching home". One version even ends the verse with "when Noah comes marching in" instead of the more familiar "for to get out of the rain". Early versions based on "Johnny comes Marching home" include "The animals marched in two by two/The polar bear and the kangaroo", and "The animals went in two by two/The elephant and the kangaroo", while early versions based on "One more River" and "Dem bones gonna rise agin" both use "The animals came two by two/The hippopotamus and the kangaroo". A later version based on "one more river" supplied the words adapted into the "Rise and Shine" camp song. The words and tune of "Rise and Shine" replace those of "One more River", requiring repetition of the first line of every verse, and repition and lengthening of words in most lines.
